Corporate Social Responsibility: Road to Economic Recovery

As far as corporate social responsibility (CSR) is concerned, Korean firms lag far behind global leaders but they are expected to catch up once the momentum gets going.

The ongoing Global CSR Conference 2011 is a chance for domestic firms to join the international top rank, according to Homeplus Group Chairman Lee Seung-han.

The Global Compact Korea Network, the Seoul bureau of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) led by Lee, hosted the three-day event that attracted 600 entrepreneurs, politicians, activists and bureaucrats from 15 countries.

“Currently, less than 200 local entities are participating in the Korea Network, which works on such issues as the environment, transparency, labor and human rights,” Lee said in an interview with The Korea Times on the sidelines of the conference that continues through today.

“We aim to increase the number by more than 10-fold to around 2,000 by 2020 for grassroots networks involving big and small firms on top of non-government organizations. Toward that end, the CSR conference will play a pivotal role in encouraging our firms to take part in the initiative.”

Dominican authorities probe US bomb plot suspect

Dominican authorities said Tuesday they are investigating the background of an immigrant accused of plotting to attack police stations and post offices in New York.

Police Chief Jose Armando Polanco said the investigation is ongoing even though suspect Jose Pimentel Sosa left the Dominican Republic at a young age and has no criminal past in the Caribbean country.

U.S. authorities have said that Pimentel, who faces terrorism-related charges, is an "al-Qaida sympathizer" who converted to Islam in 2004 and went by the name Muhammad Yusuf. He was born in the Dominican Republic but lived most of his life in Manhattan.

Kate Middleton in Non-Princessy Jumper and Jeans!

Kate Middleton in Non-Princessy Jumper and Jeans! PLUS Wearing Mulberry on a Shopping Trip

For the latest installment in Grazia’s Kate Middleton Look Book, we bring you a (rather blurry) glimpse of the Duchess sporting a dressed-down ensemble for a secret visit at a primary school in London. Yep, Prince Will’s wife is wearing a JUMPER and JEANS. Quelle horreur!

Of course, Grazia Daily doesn’t expect the DOC to swoop through the town constantly draped in silk and dripping in diamonds – but it appears some people do. Well, sort of. It was actually the school children who were bemused by Kate’s casual outfit. Where’s the real-life Disney Princess they’d dreamed of? >grump<

After waiting for 45 minutes in the car park to catch a glimpse of the Royal,"They were saying things like, 'She doesn’t look like a Princess. Where’s her dress? They didn’t believe it was the Princess they had seen on the television." Aw, poor lambs.

End of tax cut looms: Jobless benefits could also expire on Jan. 1, 2012

A tax cut that reaches 160 million Americans and government aid for the long-term unemployed will expire at the end of the year - and suck $165 billion out of the economy next year - unless Congress takes action.

Economists hoped the so-called congressional super-committee would decide whether to extend both measures. But the committee couldn't even agree on how to reach its main goal, cutting $1.2 trillion from the federal budget deficit.

If the tax cut goes away, the average family would pay about $1,000 more in taxes next year, the equivalent of an extra tank of gas every two weeks. Someone earning $100,000 would pay $2,000 more.

And if long-term unemployment benefits are allowed to expire, about

6 million people would lose weekly checks averaging about $300. For most of the long-term unemployed, that is their main source of income.

"There's an awful lot of uncertainty ahead," said Michael Hanson, senior U.S. economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Both changes would leave Americans with an estimated $165 billion less to spend. The Federal Reserve expects the economy to grow only 2.7 percent next year, and economists say the expiration of the two programs could reduce growth by a full percentage point.

The government said Tuesday that the economy grew at a 2 percent rate in July, August and September, down from earlier estimates of 2.5 percent.

Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez announced Split

"Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez have ended their relationship," a representative for the former The Bachelorette couple told People on Monday.
"As they go through this difficult time, we ask that you respect the couple's privacy."
Fedotowsky and Martinez got engaged during The Bachelorette's sixth-season finale broadcast which aired in August 2010 and moved to San Diego together shortly thereafter.
The couple had set a date for their wedding earlier this year but postponed it indefinitely when Fedotowsky broke her femur in early June in a kickboxing session and underwent surgery later that month.
"The decision to postpone [the wedding] was very difficult. I definitely shed some tears. But I want to walk down the aisle. I don't want to limp down the aisle," Fedotowsky told People in August.
However, last month, Us Weekly had reported the pair were "miserable" in their relationship due to frequent big fights and the challenge of juggling their busy work schedules.
"Their relationship has been tumultuous since day one," a mutual friend told Us. "They're either extremely happy or they can't stand each other."
"They bring out the worst in each other," another source told Us.
Fedotowsky had subsequently denied the report.

Obituaries: Shelagh Delaney, Gregory Papalexis

Gregory Papalexis, 86, whose Sabrett hot dogs have become a part of the New York City experience, died Friday in Rockleigh, N.J., according to the New Jersey funeral home handling the arrangements.

He was president, chief executive and chairman of Englewood, N.J.-based Marathon Enterprises, a supplier of hot dogs, buns, onion sauce and other products, and the owner of the Sabrett trademark.

Sabrett hot dogs are available nationwide, but on the streets of New York, they are sold from stainless-steel pushcarts with instantly recognizable blue-and-yellow umbrellas. Marathon also supplies franks to Papaya King and Gray's Papaya restaurants, and sells more than 35 million pounds of hot dogs a year.

The son of a baker, Papalexis grew up next door to a hot dog factory in upper Manhattan. He earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial relations at New York University in 1948 and entered the food business.

With a $2,500 GI loan, Papalexis bought his father's bakery and sold rolls to clients throughout New York City, making deliveries in a Cadillac because it had the biggest trunk he could find. He soon began selling hot dogs as well.

Taylor Swift Explicit Photo On Tabloid Site

Taylor Swift is well-known not only for her infectious songwriting and all-ages fan group, but also her reputation for ladylike behavior andattire. Still, the 21-year-old superstar--like many big names before her--has found herself the subject of some rather sordid gossip over the weekend.
According to TMZ , Swift has sicced her lawyers on a tabloid site called Celeb Jihad , who has published what it claims to be a "leaked" topless photo of her.
Swift's legal team has reportedly stated that the site contains "false pornographic images and false 'news'" about the singer, and threatens a lawsuit for trademark infringement if the photo is not taken down.
The site in question has not removed the photo yet; instead choosing to put up a news item stating that Swift is furious with and"waging war" against them. TMZ noted that Swift's camp had no comment on the matter. (Our own request for comment was unreturned as well.)
